About us

Derrick and Hannah

Hi! We’re Hannah and Derrick, both from south London, but Derrick has Jamaican roots. Derrick loves jazz, film and good food! He makes fantastic cakes and laughs a lot!  Hannah loves art photography, nature and the environment.

In 1999, we decided to take a trip to central Portugal, where we had been on holiday to explore the possibility of finding a smallholding to buy. We travelled in a VW camper for 6 months to find our little valley, exploring the area and talking to locals in the search of the right place. We were looking for fruit trees, spring water, flat land and a barn to do up. The dream was to create an idyllic bolthole.

We found our slice of paradise and decided to stay and create Yurt Holiday Portugal.

The faintest of footprints

The faintest of footprints

Solar energy supplies all the electricity for our yurts. The hot showers and compost toilets are part of as clean and fresh a bathroom suite as one could hope to meet anywhere, and will, we feel sure, convince any sceptic that this is an agreeable non-polluting and effective alternative solution to plumbing.

The yurts are low impact and was made by local people using local materials. They will leave very little footprint on the land once removed. Our business is small scale and family run; hence we feel we can give our guests our best.

We try to ensure that everything we use here is biodegradable, and this helps balance our organic water filtration system and recycling process. Our grey water is filtered through sand, shingle and charcoal and redirected to water trees and vines. The terraces were cleverly designed to conserve all the water that comes down from the hills around us, which is collected in tanks, and supplies our needs.
